Injuries Cost Angel His Place
Di Maria’s Confusion: From Key Player to Surplus
Benfica has grown tired of Angel Di Maria’s recurring injuries and will not renew the Argentine star’s contract.
Di Maria’s footballing life has taken a 180-degree turn. Once an irreplaceable star for Benfica, he is now on the verge of leaving. Portuguese media outlet A Bola reports that the Argentine’s contract will not be renewed, and he will depart Benfica this summer.
The main reason for Benfica’s change of heart is Di Maria’s physical issues. His recurring injuries have led the club’s management to reconsider his role. Di Maria suffered another injury this week, leaving the field due to severe pain in his right thigh.
This is Di Maria’s third injury in 2025. Benfica’s coach, Bruno Lage, informed the club’s management that he can no longer rely on Di Maria under these circumstances. Angel has already missed 11 games this season.
Benfica has concluded that Di Maria’s situation does not justify his high salary. He is the highest-paid player in the team, earning a gross annual salary of €4 million.
However, Benfica’s management wants the renowned Argentine star available for the Club World Cup. He is likely to sign a short-term contract with Benfica for the tournament and leave afterward.
