Antonio Valencia:
My Family Didn’t Let Me Join Real Madrid!
Former Manchester United defender Antonio Valencia reveals he received a serious offer from Real Madrid but stayed at United due to his family’s decision.
Former Manchester United star Antonio Valencia recently spoke with Marca, reflecting on key moments of his career and sharing his thoughts on the current state of the Red Devils.
Valencia, who joined United after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Real Madrid, revealed he received an offer from the Spanish giants but ultimately turned it down.
The retired Ecuadorian international, who became a fan favorite wearing the number 25 shirt at Old Trafford, shared memories of playing under Sir Alex Ferguson, alongside Lionel Messi, José Mourinho, and other stars.
How did you feel arriving at Manchester United right after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure?
“It was an unusual situation because Cristiano had scored about 40 goals the previous season and was about to leave. The fans were unhappy their idol was leaving. I came from Wigan and wasn’t immediately accepted by the fans. There was a perception I was replacing Ronaldo, when I just wanted to do my job. The early games were very difficult; I felt pressure every time I got the ball. The media constantly speculated about it. But I focused on training and matches, gradually improved, and eventually had 10 fantastic years at United.”
You even wore United’s famous number 7 shirt for a while. What happened?
“I was on vacation when Sir Alex Ferguson called and asked if I’d wear the number 7. I couldn’t say no to Sir Alex. I was very happy because this number has special meaning in the club’s history. We started well with it – goals, assists, good performances… but then I suffered a serious injury. At the end of the season, I returned the number 7 shirt and continued with number 25, enjoying my football.”
What was your relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson like?
“Sir Alex was like a kind grandfather; he had a truly fatherly approach. But when necessary, he could be strict. He instilled a winning mentality in the team at all times. We always took the field thinking about victory. He was a very special coach, and I’ll always remember that.”
Is it true you could have joined Real Madrid?
“Yes, I had the opportunity to transfer to Real Madrid. I even met with one of their senior executives. I welcomed the offer, but family has always been my priority. My family said they were comfortable in Manchester and wanted to stay. We didn’t move to Madrid, and thankfully I had 10 wonderful years at this club. I’m always grateful to Real Madrid’s management for the opportunity they gave me.”
How do you remember the Champions League final against Barcelona?
“I’ll tell you this memory: Lionel Messi stood still for a moment and said something like ‘It’s over now!’ Then he took the ball, scored a goal, and made an assist. We were well aware of Barcelona’s strength. We performed well in the first half and it was 1-1. But in the second half, when you face players like Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta, the difference shows and we lost control of the game.”
José Mourinho later came to Manchester United, and you won the Europa League under him. What was that period like?
“I have many memories from working with Mr. Mourinho. He was very competitive and showed affection and respect to players. But if expectations weren’t met, he could be very strict and decisive. I had a great time under him. He even gave me the chance to captain the team. I have valuable memories from that period and great respect for him and his staff.”
