Didn’t Expect It
Barcelona’s Iceman Reacts to Kounde’s Goal in a Surprising Way
Szczesny explained in the Barca One program how he experienced the decisive goal in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid.
Wojciech Szczesny has a very unique way of celebrating decisive goals. The Polish goalkeeper doesn’t let excitement overwhelm him, and sometimes this has earned him the nickname ‘Iceman.’ Fully focused on his duties, his celebrations in tense moments, like the La Liga match against Atletico at the Metropolitano or the Champions League return leg in Dortmund, have gone viral.
The Copa del Rey final was no exception for Szczesny. Although this time, the cameras didn’t zoom in on him after Jules Kounde’s decisive goal—since all attention was on the circle of players around the French defender—the Pole himself explained in the mixed zone of the stadium how he experienced that winning moment.
He told Barca One: “To be honest, when Kounde was preparing to shoot, I was organizing the defensive line because I didn’t expect the ball to go in at all. But it was a great moment for him.”
Szczesny then praised Jules: “I think he’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve ever seen in my life. He has an incredible personality and mindset. Kounde deserves this big moment. Usually, we praise him for his defensive work, but he truly deserves this moment on the big stage.”
Kounde himself admitted on the club’s TV that he still can’t believe what happened at La Cartuja: “I still haven’t fully processed it, but my teammates will definitely remind me. It was a very special night. That goal came in a sequence where I saw the pass coming, I anticipated it, controlled the ball well, and saw Lamine on the right, but the position was perfect for a shot. Everything went really well, so I’m very happy.”
