Barcelona’s protests in El Clásico: Two penalty claims denied
In the first half of the El Clásico match in the Copa del Rey final, two controversial penalty incidents occurred for Barcelona.
According to reports, a handball and a shirt-pull in the penalty area by Real Madrid players led to protests from Barcelona. However, referee Ricardo de Burgos and VAR official González Fuertes did not consider either incident a penalty.
Minute 16 – Ball contact with Ferran Torres’ hand in the penalty area
The first controversial moment came after a cross from Raphinha, when Ferran Torres touched the ball with his left hand while still on the ground. Ferran Torres appealed for a penalty, but neither De Burgos nor VAR deemed it a foul, and play continued.
Minute 44 – Cubarsí’s shirt pulled in the penalty area
During a corner, the ball crossed in front of the goal and eventually hit the post. Meanwhile, Cubarsí was held back by Ceballos and couldn’t reach the ball. Despite this, neither De Burgos nor VAR considered it a foul, and play resumed.
However, Iturralde González, a refereeing expert for AS, disagrees with both penalty claims. Regarding the first incident, he said: “Torres is in a natural position. The ball hits a hand he was using for support, so the referee’s decision is correct.”
On the second incident, he said: “Since VAR believes the central defender (Cubarsí) couldn’t have reached the ball, the incident is not relevant to the play and is not a penalty.”
