Champions League Transforms Ballon d’Or Race
The current season of the UEFA Champions League has drastically changed, significantly impacting the race for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
According to reports, while teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich were initially considered the main contenders for the title, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain have now reached the semifinals. This shift will directly influence the Ballon d’Or voting, an award closely tied to Champions League success.
Last year, Rodri Hernández of Manchester City was named the world’s best player, with Real Madrid players dominating the rankings. However, this season, six of last year’s top players, including Rodri and Kylian Mbappé, were eliminated before the semifinals. This has increased the chances of players from Barcelona, Inter, Arsenal, and PSG to win the Ballon d’Or.
Barcelona is in an excellent position. Lamine Yamal, according to reports, has a stronger chance following the elimination of other contenders in the quarterfinals. Pedri, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski are also in the spotlight. Barcelona, currently leading La Liga and in the Copa del Rey final, could finally compete for the Ballon d’Or after years.
Inter Milan is also having a brilliant season. The Serie A leaders are in the Coppa Italia and Champions League semifinals, but their players lack the standout statistics of Barcelona’s stars. Arsenal, second in the Premier League and eliminated from domestic cups, has its main chance in the Champions League.
Paris Saint-Germain holds a special position. Under Luis Enrique, they have won Ligue 1, reached the Coupe de France final, and will face Arsenal in the Champions League semifinals. Ousmane Dembélé, Barcelona’s former star, has shone at PSG and could become a leading Ballon d’Or contender if his team wins the Champions League.
These competitions have reshaped the Ballon d’Or landscape, with players from the semifinalists—especially Yamal and Dembélé—taking center stage.
