Controversial Scene Analysis: Arsenal Got Lucky!

According to reports, in this match held at the Emirates Stadium, the two teams faced each other in the first leg of the semi-finals, with PSG starting the game very aggressively.

Ousmane Dembélé gave his team the lead with a beautiful goal just four minutes into the game. The forward, who has been in excellent form this season, is one of the main contenders for the Ballon d’Or and dealt a heavy blow to Arsenal early on.

Dembélé’s early goal forced Mikel Arteta’s team to face a tough challenge to get back into the game and reach the Champions League final (for the first time since 2006). However, things could have been worse for the Gunners when a penalty might have been awarded in favor of Paris Saint-Germain.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the former Napoli star, made a technical move into the Arsenal penalty area and appeared to be brought down by Jurriën Timber. Slow-motion replays showed the Arsenal defender wrapping his arms around the Georgian international, but the referee did not call a foul. Although the PSG star protested in surprise, the referee’s decision stood, and the game continued.

    Khvicha Kvaratskhelia incident

Many fans on social media were surprised by this decision. However, Clattenburg, who was part of Amazon Prime’s coverage team, explained the incident.

Shortly after the incident, Mark Clattenburg, the former Premier League referee, joined Amazon Prime’s analysis team and explained why the match referee did not consider it a penalty. He said that the way the PSG forward fell and his positioning at the moment of contact did not seem natural. Clattenburg also admitted that Kvaratskhelia should have been booked for his reaction after the incident. During the broadcast, he said: “I don’t think this was a penalty. The referee is looking to see if the fall is natural or not. The forward raises his hand, which is usually a sign of simulation, trying to tell the referee that a foul has been committed. What I didn’t like was his reaction after the contact. He ran towards the referee and definitely deserved a yellow card for dissent. I think Kvaratskhelia and PSG were lucky that the referee didn’t take a hard line with them.”
