De Bruyne: I Was Shocked, This is a Forced Goodbye

Kevin De Bruyne, the 33-year-old Belgian midfielder, revealed that Manchester City decided not to renew his contract, a decision he described as a “forced goodbye.” He admitted feeling shocked and disappointed but emphasized his professionalism and commitment to the club until the end of the season.

De Bruyne explained that he was informed of the decision in a brief meeting with Txiki Begiristain (sporting director) and Ferran Soriano (CEO). He said, “I was a bit shocked. I received no offers during the year, and the club made its decision. Even though I was surprised, I have to accept it. I still believe I can perform at this level, but I understand clubs have to make decisions.”

He added that he struggled emotionally in the days following the news, saying, “My family was on vacation, and I was alone. It was a strange feeling.” However, after publicly announcing the news on social media, he felt relief, as he no longer had to hide his emotions.

De Bruyne, who ranks second in Premier League history with 119 assists (after Ryan Giggs’ 162) and has won 16 trophies with City, did not disclose the exact reasons behind the club’s decision but suggested that this season’s struggles may have played a role. “Maybe if the team had performed as usual, they would have made a different decision,” he said.

Regarding his future, De Bruyne said he has not made a decision yet and is open to all options, including joining another Premier League club, moving to MLS, or playing in the Saudi Pro League. He stressed the importance of his family (his wife and three children under 10) in his decision-making process.

Manchester City, which spent £180 million on transfers in January, is planning a major squad overhaul this summer. Players like Morgan Gibbs-White and Florian Wirtz have been linked with the club. Pep Guardiola previously stated that the team needs players who can handle the pressure of high-intensity matches twice a week, which may have contributed to De Bruyne’s departure despite his strong form this season.

De Bruyne, the last remaining player from City’s pre-Guardiola era (2016), will mark the end of a golden era for the club—one that included six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph.
