Enrique: I’d Give Up My Record to Reach the Champions League Final

PSG’s manager openly stated that he would accept a defeat against Nice tomorrow if it guaranteed his team’s qualification for the Champions League final.

Luis Enrique: I'd Give Up My Record to Reach the Champions League Final

Ahead of the match against Nice, PSG’s final game before facing Arsenal, Luis Enrique spoke to the media in a press conference.

He also confirmed that his team aims to break all records, particularly in Ligue 1, and could become the first team in the competition’s history to finish the season unbeaten.

On the difficulty of preparing for this match: “This is a unique situation. I think it’s the first time we’ve won the league with this many games remaining. Fortunately, there’s an opportunity to break some important records, which motivates us.”

Satisfaction with the team’s current performance and expectations for tomorrow’s match: “Satisfied? Very satisfied.”

Analyzing Arsenal and the importance of set-pieces: “Have I planned more for set-pieces? No, because I’ve known Arsenal well for a long time. We’ve played against them before. We have the same concerns and flaws that have brought us this far. If you see this as negative, that’s your problem. We want to win all titles with our style, which is attacking football. Of course, we can improve in all aspects of the game.”

Difficulty of playing before a Champions League knockout stage: “This is like the theory of relativity. Everyone looks at it from their own perspective. It’s like a blanket that either covers your feet or your head. If you change players, they ask why you did it; if you don’t, they ask why the same players played, or they get injured or tired. Every coach chooses the path that brings the most benefit. That sums up your question.”

Vitinha’s level and potential for improvement: “Vitinha is one of the best players in the world in his position. I don’t see two better players than him in any team. I might be wrong, but I’m usually not.”

Importance of speaking French in the dressing room: “The team’s language isn’t that important. What matters is that a French player learns from other styles—English, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Russian, it doesn’t matter. This shows the importance of communication in the world. I’m progressing slowly but surely with French. Learning the language of the country you work in is vital. This is one of my motivations. A friend in Italy told me that when you learn a new language, you gain a new life, you start understanding people and the country differently. This is advice I always give to my players. It’s a positive and new situation.”

PSG’s level: “Tough moments in the Champions League have made us better. Now we’re in another stage of the competition with a different motivation. We want to break important records. We’re obsessed with the Champions League. We’re in the best form of the season, and I’m sure we’ll see an excellent version of Paris. Tomorrow, against one of the best teams in the league, we have the chance to show this.”

Maintaining pressure and motivation in the team: “Honestly, if someone told me that losing to Nice would take us to the Champions League final, I’d be happy and lose right now. Our goal wasn’t to break records. If someone could guarantee that we’d lose to Nice tomorrow and reach the Champions League final, I’d sign it right now. But since no one can guarantee that, and we’re an ambitious team, we’re in a position to break records. The most important thing is to be 100% ready for the match against Arsenal. We don’t speculate. It’s not just about winning trophies, but I’m convinced that trophies can be won with attacking football. I’ve always felt this way.”
