I understand the frustration, but not the reaction
Flick: I didn’t like the behavior of some players
Hans-Dieter Flick spoke about the strong anger of Ansu Fati, Fermin Lopez, and Hector Fort after the match against Celta Vigo in today’s press conference.
According to reports, Barcelona will host the strong Mallorca team tomorrow night at Montjuic. A team that is in seventh place and fighting for a European spot. Barca certainly doesn’t have an easy task ahead, especially after the strange match against Celta, which almost ended in defeat and a draw. Flick’s players are now more cautious.
Flick attended the press conference for this match and answered questions.
Importance of the match against Mallorca: “Mallorca is having a very good season. They have a chance to play in Europe next season. It will be a tough game; I know them. They are a very experienced team and one of the best in quick transitions. They have played very well so far; we must be ready.”
How much will Lewandowski’s absence affect the team? “We have to wait. When he is ready to play, we will all be happy. We don’t know how long he will be out; I prefer not to say anything.”
How is Ter Stegen’s condition? “He is ready and on the verge of returning. We need to talk about the planning. I will talk to him. We will wait a bit to choose the best time for his return.”
Complaints about match scheduling? “I said what I wanted to say and have nothing more to add.”
How do you manage the motivation of players who feel they deserve more minutes? “I understand that some players are unhappy with their situation. I was a player myself and completely understand them. Everyone wants to show that they can be part of the team and help. I understand that. But not their reactions. For me, this situation should be accepted. We beat Celta, had a great comeback, and I think we made the best decisions. The players should see that. We want positive reactions from them, not what happened after the game. Usually, everyone celebrates the victory, and that’s what I prefer.”
Do you think Barcelona and Real Madrid will drop more points in La Liga? “You can never predict what will happen. We saw Real struggle against Atletico. These are tough and difficult games. We have to fight until the end. I hope we don’t lose any points until the end of the season, but we have to play every game. When we don’t play well like against Celta, it becomes difficult. We have to improve. I hope this game is a warning to correct our mistakes. There is still a long way to go, the path is long, and Real Madrid is a great team that will certainly fight for its goals.”
The team’s condition in the next two weeks? “The most important thing is to focus on ourselves. We must improve after every game. We have the quality to beat any team, but only if we do things right. After the game against Celta, today I see a positive feeling in the team. The team is in good shape, and we must continue this trend.”
Is fatigue Barcelona’s biggest enemy? “I’ve said before that we have to manage it. Having fresh and fit players for the game against Mallorca is very important. Managing minutes is tough because players want to show they are ready and don’t need rest, but we have to manage, and they must respect our decisions.”
Will the Copa del Rey final affect La Liga? “No. We know these are two separate competitions, and Real Madrid also wants to win. After this game, we have more games in the Champions League and La Liga.”
Importance of Ferran Torres in Lewandowski’s absence? “Very important. We have to manage this situation. He is in the best phase of his career and has scored 10 goals in La Liga. I think the number 9 position suits him. He is a fast player, has good ball control, and helps us in defense. He is in good form, but we have to manage him because we need him until the end of the season.”
How is your relationship with Raphinha? “First, I must say that the whole team is very professional. I have a team that always focuses on improvement, and that is very important. Raphinha and all the players are doing a great job. They are leaders, and that’s what we need. I am very satisfied with the team, their performance on the field, and their preparation for the next game.”
Frenkie de Jong’s poor performance against Celta: “Today we analyzed this game and told the players what we expect. Sometimes it feels like when we have the ball, we shouldn’t lose it, but good defense is also important. When we have possession, we must be careful not to lose the ball. Maybe there were four or five situations in the game that I didn’t like. We have to improve.”
