Beware of Set-Piece Threats
Flick Warns Barcelona Stars
Barcelona has conceded three goals from corners in their last six matches, while Inter Milan scored both of their goals in the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich from set-pieces.
Barcelona knows they must be extremely careful on Wednesday night.
The UEFA Champions League has reached the semi-finals, where details play a decisive role. However, Barcelona has recently been careless in defending set-pieces. In their last six matches, the team has conceded three goals from corners. Natan’s goal against Betis, following a corner delivered by Lucescu, denied Barcelona a win (1-1).
Giroud’s goal in Dortmund put Barcelona under severe pressure when they were trailing 2-0, complicating their qualification. Even more dramatic was the goal they conceded last Saturday in Seville, where Choupo-Moting headed in a corner delivered by Arda Güler. Barcelona had to fight hard to turn the result around and may need to reconsider their approach. Their own players complained about the lack of focus in the match against Betis.
This issue is significant, especially considering Inter Milan is a formidable team in set-pieces. Two weeks ago, they secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals with two goals from corners. The first goal was scored by Lautaro Martínez and the second by Pavard, the French defender.
Flick has certainly emphasized the importance of this aspect in training. Barcelona is not a tall team, and in Saturday’s match against Real Madrid, they struggled against three powerful players like Bellingham, Rüdiger, and Choupo-Moting in every set-piece. They know how much trouble they will face if they reach the final and face Arsenal, one of Europe’s best teams in this regard.
But for now, they must solve the Inter problem. This depends on concentration and mentality. Given the importance of the issue, Barcelona must pay the necessary attention and prevent problems with the right approach.
