A Major Signing to Remember the Golden Days
Harry Kane Could Be Manchester United’s New Cantona
Teddy Sheringham, former Manchester United striker, believes signing Harry Kane could be a major boost for the club.
According to reports, Sir Alex Ferguson needed a larger-than-life personality in the 1990s to set an example at the Theatre of Dreams. Eric Cantona was the man tasked with bringing these qualities to the Red Devils alongside players like Paul Ince, Roy Keane, and Steve Bruce.
An extraordinary era of success followed, but Ferguson retired in 2013. Since then, Manchester United has suffered a painful decline and is currently 13th in the Premier League under Portuguese manager Rúben Amorim.
Questions have been raised about the club’s recruitment process, as significant funds have been spent, yet a proven No. 9 striker is still needed. Various options have been discussed ahead of the next transfer window, and Teddy Sheringham has shared his thoughts on who could be a smart signing.
The 1999 treble winner told Goal: “If I had to choose between Matheus Cunha or Victor Gyökeres, I’d pick Cunha just because of his Premier League experience. Gyökeres might have shined and scored in Portugal, but if he comes to United and fails to score in four games, the questions will start: Why did we sign him? The pressure will mount, and if he can’t handle it, problems will arise.
You need a leader. You need a top-level player who steps up like Cantona or me when we arrived at Manchester United and said: ‘I was born to play here.’ Not someone who asks: ‘Will I succeed here?’ There are different personalities in football, and you need someone who leads the attack. That’s why you should go for someone like Harry Kane. This is what United used to do—they went and signed the best players in the market.”
