Inter 2 – Bayern 2: Nerazzurri Advance to Champions League Semifinals
Inter Milan overcame Bayern Munich in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, securing their place in the semifinals.
The first half ended goalless, with Inter maintaining their 2-1 aggregate lead from the first leg. Bayern Munich dominated possession and created several chances through Ulisses, Müller, Kimmich, and Sané, but Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer was rarely tested.
Bayern had the better opportunities in the first half. In the 6th minute, Thomas Müller fired a shot from Ulisses’ pass, but Sommer saved comfortably. In the 12th minute, Bastoni made a crucial interception to deflect Ulisses’ shot for a corner after a Müller pass.
In the 36th minute, Laimer broke down the flank and set up Müller and Sané, but Darmian blocked both shots, and Sommer collected the corner. In the 39th minute, Sané’s shot from Goretzka’s pass and Kane’s header were both denied by Sommer.
Bayern came closest in the 44th minute when Kimmich crossed from the right, Stanisic kept the ball alive, and Kane delivered a cutback, but Sommer gathered safely. Inter also had chances: in the 9th minute, Thuram controlled Sommer’s long ball and set up Di Marco, whose shot was saved by Bayern keeper Ulreich. In the 29th minute, Di Marco’s cross and Acerbi’s header nearly found Thuram, who couldn’t connect. In the 33rd minute, Çalhanoğlu’s long-range effort narrowly missed.
The second half at San Siro started with a bang. In the 52nd minute, Bayern equalized through Harry Kane from Goretzka’s pass, making it 1-0 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate. Inter responded immediately, with Lautaro Martínez leveling in the 58th minute from a Di Marco corner, putting Inter 3-2 ahead on aggregate. Three minutes later, Benjamin Pavard headed in Çalhanoğlu’s corner to make it 2-1 on the night and 4-2 overall.
Bayern pulled one back in the 76th minute when Eric Dier headed in Gnabry’s cross, making it 2-2 on the night and 3-4 on aggregate. Despite Bayern’s late pressure, Inter held on to advance to the semifinals, where they will face Barcelona.
