Inter and Milan Fans Unite in Mourning for the Late Pope (Photos)
Players, fans, and coaches of AC Milan and Inter Milan paid tribute to the late Pope before tonight’s derby.
According to reports, emotional scenes unfolded at San Siro Stadium on Wednesday night as football matches resumed in Italy. Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88. As a result, four Serie A matches scheduled for Monday were postponed in honor of the late Pope.
In the Derby della Madonnina between AC Milan and Inter Milan, players from both teams stood together with clasped hands around the center circle before kickoff. An image of the late Pope was displayed on the stadium’s big screen, met with widespread applause from fans. Classical music then played in the stadium for a few minutes to allow for a moment of silence.
Similar scenes were witnessed across Italy. Before Juventus’ match against Parma, an image of Pope Francis was displayed behind the stands. In the Genoa vs. Lazio match, a heavy silence filled the stadium, and a similar atmosphere prevailed before Cagliari faced Fiorentina in Sardinia.
The funeral of Pope Francis will be held on Saturday in St. Peter’s Square.
