Inter Reminds Me of Italy’s World Cup Winning Team
Marco Tardelli, a 1982 World Cup winner with Italy and now a commentator, wrote in an article for La Stampa that Inter Milan’s match against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals reminded him of a memorable era.
According to reports, Tardelli, who played for Inter and Juventus and also coached Inter for a season, praised Inter’s progress to the semi-finals: “When I saw Inter against Bayern Munich, memories of the 1982 World Cup came back to me—when we defeated Brazil and felt invincible, ready for any battle.”
Tardelli added: “We had changed by then, and in our faces, looks, and eyes, there was faith and hope. We were sure that there was always a teammate beside us to help. That’s the same feeling I had in those legendary moments, and now I see it in the eyes and spirit of Inter’s players.” Tardelli believes Simone Inzaghi’s Inter has the same unity and motivation.
The scorer of one of Italy’s goals in the final against Germany saw only one danger for Inter: “Only pride and arrogance can change the course of history, but I don’t see these traits in Inzaghi’s team.”
With the quarter-finals over, the semi-final schedule has been set, and Inter will face Barcelona in the penultimate stage, just as they did in 2010. The first leg will be played on April 30 in Catalonia, and the return leg will be on May 6 at San Siro.
