Laureus Awards: Lamine Yamal Emerging Athlete, Real Madrid Best Team!
At the 2025 Laureus Awards ceremony, Lamine Yamal was named Best Emerging Athlete, and Real Madrid was crowned Best Team of the Year.
According to reports, Barcelona’s rising star has been breaking records at an astonishing pace, most recently becoming the youngest athlete to receive one of these prestigious trophies—often referred to as the “Oscars of Sports.”
The young Blaugrana player, despite his tender age, has been one of the best footballers in the world. He won the Euros with the Spanish national team and was a key player under coach Luis de la Fuente. With this award, Lamine completed his personal treble, having previously won the “Kopa Trophy” and “Golden Boy” in recent months—an unprecedented achievement for a footballer at the highest professional level.
He surpassed other nominees in this competition: athletes such as Julien Alfred (sprinting), Summer McIntosh (swimming), Letsile Tebogo (athletics), Victor Wembanyama (basketball), and Bayer Leverkusen’s football team.
Lamine Yamal earned this award for his performances with both the Spanish national team and Barcelona, where he has been recognized as one of the world’s best young players. The award was presented by former Barcelona player Thiago Alcântara, who was also part of Hansi Flick’s coaching staff earlier this season.
Due to commitments with Barcelona, Lamine Yamal could not attend the Laureus Awards ceremony. He is scheduled to play against Mallorca at the Olympic Stadium in La Liga on Tuesday night at 21:30. His participation in the ceremony was impossible due to Barcelona’s packed schedule in this final stretch of the season. The Laureus Awards ceremony took place at the Cibeles Palace in Madrid.
Yamal said in a video after winning the award: “Hello and good evening to everyone, I would have loved to be with you tonight, but unfortunately, I couldn’t. First of all, I want to thank the Laureus Academy. Receiving such an award is an honor for me and my family, and I can’t forget Spain and my teammates at Barça—without them, I wouldn’t be here.”
At the ceremony, Real Madrid’s senior team also won the award for Best Team of the Year. Los Blancos won La Liga and the Champions League last season, followed by the UEFA Super Cup by defeating Atalanta, and later claimed the Club World Cup title. Real Madrid’s competitors for this award were the McLaren Formula 1 team, the Boston Celtics basketball team, Barcelona’s women’s football team, the USA men’s basketball team, and the Spanish men’s national football team. Ultimately, Real Madrid emerged victorious.
