The Dark Season of the Italian Star
Liverpool Crowned Champions, Chiesa Still Not!
Federico Chiesa, Liverpool’s only summer signing, arrived in England hoping to revive his football career, but his first season in the Premier League did not go as expected.
According to “Varzesh3,” injuries and a lack of trust from Liverpool manager Arne Slot led to the Italian winger spending the season on the sidelines, only playing minimal minutes in less important matches. However, he celebrated Liverpool’s title win against Tottenham like the rest of the players, though he has not yet officially qualified for the Premier League winner’s medal.
Under Premier League rules, a player must feature in at least five league matches to receive a winner’s medal. Chiesa has only played in four league matches, all as a substitute, and thus is not yet officially considered a champion. After recovering from an early-season injury, he returned late in the year but failed to secure a regular spot in Slot’s team, mostly featuring in cup competitions or as a substitute.
With four matches remaining in the season against Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton, and Crystal Palace, Slot has the opportunity to give Chiesa playing time and make him the second Italian player after Mario Balotelli (2012) to officially win the Premier League. Given Liverpool’s confirmed title win, it would be logical for Slot to grant Chiesa this opportunity.
Otherwise, Chiesa still has another chance. The Premier League awards 40 winner’s medals each season, distributed at the club’s discretion. Players with at least five appearances automatically receive a medal, but the remaining medals can be awarded to players like Chiesa. Thus, while he is not yet officially a champion, he still has a chance to earn the title through remaining matches or the club’s decision. His future performances and Slot’s decisions will be decisive.
