The player celebrated his crucial goal by lifting his shirt, an act that immediately earned him a yellow card for violating uniform regulations. Additionally, the celebration was quickly compared to Ricardo Kaka’s memorable gesture in 2007, when the Brazilian midfielder lifted his AC Milan shirt after defeating Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League final to display the message “I Belong to Jesus”.

The Laws of the Game leave little room for interpretation regarding religious displays. According to Law 4 of the IFAB regulations, players are strictly prohibited from displaying any political, religious, or personal messages on their clothing during matches.

The law states: “Equipment must not carry any political, religious, or personal slogans, statements, or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements, or images, other than the manufacturer’s logo. Any violation will result in disciplinary action by the competition organizer, national football association, or FIFA.”

    FA Rules

The English Football Association is currently reviewing the incident and may issue an official warning or impose further sanctions against Gakpo. The Liverpool forward is expected to feature in the team’s next match against Chelsea on May 4.
