Financial Troubles Haunt the Red Devils
Manchester United Cannot Sell Struggling Star
Manchester United, due to financial constraints and regulations, will not be able to sell Andre Onana despite his poor performances.
According to reports, Onana was dropped from Manchester United’s squad for the 4-1 defeat against Newcastle after two high-profile errors in the Europa League last week.
David Ornstein, a renowned journalist for The Athletic, explained that concerns over Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) could force the Cameroonian goalkeeper to stay at the club, with his high wages also being a deterrent for potential buyers.
Manchester United paid over £47 million (€59 million) to sign Onana from Inter Milan, and Ornstein believes the only way the club could justify selling him is if they make a profit—otherwise, his departure would be recorded as a loss under financial regulations.
Speaking to NBC Sports, Ornstein said: “This raises questions about Onana’s future. He joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023 for £47.2 million on a five-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months. Unless a club offers a significantly higher fee, United’s hopes of selling him for a profit are slim, which could complicate their financial situation.”
Onana recently changed his agent, initially aiming for a contract extension or improved terms. However, he may now be forced to seek a transfer—something Manchester United did not anticipate.
Onana’s contract runs until 2028, but reports suggest his teammates are frustrated with his performances, indicating he may eventually have to leave. However, if no club steps forward, United may have to bench him.
