Manchester United Identifies Replacement for Onana
Manchester United’s management is monitoring the conditions of Ricardo Santos and Lucas Chevalier for the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to reports, Manchester United is tracking two goalkeepers for a potential summer transfer, amid concerns over the long-term future of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir at the club.
Both players have recently come under media scrutiny for their poor performances with the Red Devils. Onana has faced the most criticism, particularly for two glaring errors during the 5-4 aggregate victory over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals.
His mistakes led manager Rúben Amorim to bench him for the Premier League match against Newcastle, but Bayindir also failed to impress, especially in ball distribution. Reports suggest that the former Fenerbahçe goalkeeper may be sold due to doubts over his ability to fit Amorim’s preferred playing style.
The report also mentions the possible retirement of Tom Heaton at the end of the season and his potential transition into a coaching role at Old Trafford. As a result, United is closely monitoring Ricardo Santos from Eintracht Frankfurt and Lucas Chevalier from Lille in the coming weeks.
The 22-year-old Santos has mostly served as Kevin Trapp’s backup this season but started the last five matches due to Trapp’s calf injury, delivering solid performances. Santos, a Copa Libertadores winner with Flamengo, has also represented Brazil’s U-20 team twice.
On the other hand, Chevalier has played every minute of Lille’s Ligue 1 and Champions League campaign this season and has been called up to the French national team twice, though he is yet to make his senior debut. He boasts an impressive record of 35 clean sheets in 94 Ligue 1 appearances, conceding 94 goals in that span.
Interest in these two goalkeepers does not necessarily signal the end of Onana’s time at Old Trafford. The Cameroonian goalkeeper, who had a serious conversation with Amorim after Thursday’s thrilling 5-4 win over Lyon, is eager to fight for his place in the starting lineup.
