Rafael Márquez spoke about his time at the Catalan club, saying he created a wave of excitement in his home country, Mexico.
The former Mexican defender and current assistant to Javier Aguirre in the Mexican national team participated in the legends match between Real Madrid and Barcelona in Toluca. In this match, the Spanish capital team defeated Barcelona 10-9 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time. The Mexican football legend spoke to Claro TV after the match.
Márquez scored from the penalty spot and recalled when he lost a final with Atlas against Toluca while playing in Liga MX: “Honestly, I have good memories, even though I lost that final. Toluca is a historic team, and returning to this stadium is a pleasure.”
Rafael Márquez experienced major tournaments with Barcelona.
Márquez added: “Above all, enjoying this game is important. Playing against Real Madrid has a different atmosphere, and being with my country’s people and fans on this field is a pleasure. I’m happy to be here again with my teammates.”
The player, who has participated in five World Cups, admitted that many in Mexico became Barcelona fans because of his outstanding performances: “Yes, because of me, many in Mexico switched from Real Madrid to Barcelona, but that’s a fact, and I’m grateful for the love and support they showed me and my teammates.”
For this Mexican, being invited to such friendly matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona legends remains an honor: “When you train and wear the jersey, you feel the same passion. This is something that is never forgotten. I do this with pleasure, especially for a club that was special to me. The people welcomed us very well, and I hope such matches will be held here again.”
