Barcelona’s German goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen, reflected on his years guarding the team’s goal in an interview with Fabrizio Romano, sharing memories from his time at the club.

Two parts of his conversation stood out to fans. One was when ter Stegen chose the most painful goal he has ever conceded as Barcelona’s goalkeeper, and the other when he stated he prefers Xavi over Pep Guardiola.

When asked about the most painful goal he has conceded while wearing Barcelona’s jersey, ter Stegen went back to 2019. That was when Liverpool made a historic comeback at Anfield, defeating Barcelona 4-0. Barcelona, who had won the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, suffered a heavy defeat at Anfield and failed to reach the final.

In the 78th minute of that game, Trent Alexander-Arnold stood behind a corner kick and, with a move Liverpool fans call “Trent’s magic,” passed the ball to Divock Origi, who scored his second and Liverpool’s fourth goal, sending the Reds to the final.

ter Stegen said: “The fourth goal we conceded that night, the one Origi scored, still hurts me. I still get very upset when I think about it.”

When asked which team he would like to play for besides Barcelona, the goalkeeper replied: “There is no other team I would like to play for. I only love Barcelona.”

ter Stegen, when asked what profession he would have chosen if he hadn’t been a goalkeeper, said: “I would have liked to be a psychologist or a chef.”

Another controversy from ter Stegen was choosing between two Barcelona coaches, Xavi and Pep Guardiola. He responded: “I wasn’t playing here when Pep was Barcelona’s coach. Both are great coaches, but since I played under Xavi, I choose him.”
