Mkhitaryan: Bayern talks too much, we didn’t celebrate qualification

Henrikh Mkhitaryan believes that after the victory in the first leg in Munich, the players’ excessive joy was natural, but it was not an early celebration of qualification or a title.

Mkhitaryan: Bayern talks too much, we didn't celebrate qualification

Tomorrow night, Inter Milan will host Bayern Munich in a big match to defend their 2-1 first-leg lead and advance to the UEFA Champions League semifinals. It’s not an easy task, but the Serie A leaders are in their best form.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan participated in the pre-match press conference.

There is a fantastic atmosphere in this group. Is there awareness and motivation to achieve something exceptional?
This is a great opportunity, but we must focus on tomorrow’s match. It will be a tough game against a very strong team. The coach built this team four years ago, and I’ve been here for three years. What Inzaghi has done for the club is very important. We want to help him and pursue our goals. Tomorrow, we will give everything to win and go as far as possible. In the end, we’ll see if we reach the final or not.

Bayern has sent messages about your excessive celebration. What do you expect from them? They talk too much, and of course, everyone can say what they want. We know what we did, we know we were happy, but it wasn’t a celebration. We want to focus on our game, on our style, that’s it. Many people outside the pitch and the club talk; we try not to listen. That’s how football is.

In every game, it’s said that Inter is almost obliged to win. Does this make you nervous or motivated?
We are calm. We are mature enough and have the necessary experience. We know we have to win every game, whether in the Champions League, Serie A, or Coppa Italia. We don’t need to listen to outside talk or the media. We know where we want to go, and to get there, we have to win every day, starting from training to the match. We don’t get nervous because we’ve accepted the responsibility for the results we create.

Many players in the team have a high average age. Does this experienced group know that not many opportunities are left?
We always have more to give and do our best to help the team. We know the team will also help us. Maybe this is my last quarter-final, semi-final, or final, who knows? That’s why we try to go one step further. Tomorrow we’ll see if we do it together or not.

You said Inter could be unstoppable. Do you still believe that tomorrow you must be like this?
I didn’t say this after the Bayern match; I said it two months ago or more. I gave an opinion, and you made it a headline—no problem. That was my opinion then. I see how my teammates play and sweat for a positive result. I still think we are a very strong team, and that’s why we are fighting on three fronts and want to go as far as possible. You play the whole season and year to win something, and this season could have a lot for us.

Is this the most exhausting season of your career?
I can say it’s one of the toughest seasons I’ve played. Now it’s mid-April, and we’re still fighting on three fronts. It’s been one of the most exhausting seasons, but on the other hand, playing every 3-4 days and competing for all goals is enjoyable. I’m very happy to have reached this stage in my life and career. Maybe it won’t happen again. I’ll play for one or two more years, maybe retire at the end of the season, but now I’m very happy playing for this club and pursuing our goals.

Is Ulysse the most dangerous player in Bayern?
He is an excellent player, but not just him—the whole Bayern team is strong. Ulysse impressed me; I knew and followed him when he was at Crystal Palace. He is technically good, fast, and now plays fantastic football. But we will do our best not to let him play well like in the first leg. I hope we perform well tomorrow.

Do you consider yourselves the favorites tomorrow?
We don’t think about the Munich result because it was a week ago. Tomorrow starts from zero; both teams have a chance and possibility to win. We must show our best performance and give everything to win. We have a big advantage, and that’s our fans. I hope we move forward together.

Bayern must attack from the beginning to make up for the result. Isn’t that right?
We think about how we will play, not what Bayern will do. We are playing at home and want to show our best performance. We know Bayern is coming to win, but we also want to win. It won’t be easy, but we are ready.

    Does adrenaline eliminate fatigue?
Yes, playing every 3-4 days is more enjoyable than one match a week, especially when we are competing in all tournaments. This gives us great motivation to continue. We play every match as if it’s our last. That’s why we’re happy with this adrenaline.
