New La Liga Rule Benefits Barcelona: Lamine Yamal’s Contract Renewal Made Easier
La Liga’s new rule makes it easier for Barcelona to renew Lamine Yamal’s contract.
La Liga has introduced a new rule to facilitate the registration of young players’ contracts, paving the way for Lamine Yamal’s renewal with Barcelona. According to this rule, even if a club has exceeded its salary cap, it can still register a contract for one season.
Last November, La Liga approved a rule aimed at simplifying contract renewals for academy players. This rule, recently announced alongside measures to enhance clubs’ financial flexibility and competitive fairness, could significantly ease the renewal process for Lamine Yamal at Barcelona.
La Liga clarified that young players’ contracts can be renewed without affecting the current season’s salary cap. This means clubs like Barcelona, which are currently above the cap while awaiting approval for the sale of Camp Nou’s VIP seats, can still proceed.
To benefit from this rule, the player must be under 24 years old and have spent at least three consecutive seasons under an official contract with the same club—conditions that Lamine Yamal fully meets.
However, the excess salary must be compensated within the season or deducted from the next season’s cap. This gives Barcelona more time to officially register Yamal’s new contract, which will extend until 2030 after the young star turns 18.
Both Lamine Yamal and Barcelona agree that he should be among the team’s highest earners. Yamal has expressed his strong desire to stay at Barcelona but has also asked his agent to negotiate a contract reflecting his current status. The young player believes his performances justify being among Barcelona’s top earners, and the club agrees.
