Nico González:
Guardiola Insists Until You Improve
Nico González, Manchester City midfielder, says Pep Guardiola’s insistence on details helps his teammates improve.
Nico González, Manchester City midfielder, spoke about working with Pep Guardiola in an interview with the Erasmus FC program.
Manchester City spent heavily in the winter transfer window to improve their poor performance. Among them, Nico González joined the team from Porto for a fee close to €60 million.
The Spanish midfielder was brought in as an emergency solution to replace Rodri. No one has been able to fill the shoes of the recent Ballon d’Or winner, but Nico is gradually adapting to the new league, his role in the team, and Guardiola’s expectations on the field.
Guardiola, the Catalan coach, has been a key factor in his rapid progress. Nico González confirmed this in an interview with “Erasmus FC” and explained what it’s like to work with this coach.
The young player emphasized: “Training sessions are really engaging; we do rondos almost every day, so it’s very enjoyable.” Rondos are one of the common drills in Guardiola’s training sessions.
Nico González also explained Guardiola’s method for player improvement: “You learn a lot. He emphasizes specific things that are important, especially for central midfielders. He insists on these points every day, and eventually, you focus on improving that aspect.”
Relationship with Kevin De Bruyne
In a preview of this recently published interview, the Spanish midfielder spoke about Kevin De Bruyne and his sense of humor: “In my first game, I got injured in the 15th or 20th minute, and he teased me a lot. I was surprised; I had only been playing for three days, and he’s very funny. What really caught my attention is that I see him a lot in the gym. He’s always there before and after training.”
Finally, Nico spoke about the tension during negotiations to join City: “There were only 10 days left until the transfer window closed, and those 10 days were terrible and full of stress. On the first day they told me, if necessary, I would have come directly that night after the game, even by car. To come here, to such a club, there was no doubt.”
