We Must Finish the Job at San Mamés
Nico Williams: I’ve Been Told About the Hell of Old Trafford
Nico Williams emphasized in the pre-match press conference against Manchester United that they must secure a good result tomorrow at San Mamés and will give everything to advance and win the title.
Nico Williams is certain that the semi-final against Manchester United will be a special experience. The first leg of the Europa League semi-final will take place tomorrow at San Mamés.
Nico said in the press conference: “Great players show themselves in big matches. I’m very eager for tomorrow’s game and also for the match at Old Trafford. I hope we can score because we all have great enthusiasm for this game and will give our all. I have the ability to do it.”
Nico believes playing the first leg at San Mamés is not a disadvantage: “We are a very ambitious team and will show our best side. The atmosphere at Old Trafford also motivates us to perform at our best.”
Nico is not thinking about the result: “Everything will be very close, and we must do things very well. If the fans support us from the first minute, we will have a great chance.”
He added: “The first leg at San Mamés is very important for us. We must get a good result because they will put a lot of pressure on us at home. We are calm, and if we perform like in previous stages, everything will go well. Rest assured, we will give everything to reach the final.”
Nico emphasized: “No team is the clear favorite. They have great players like Bruno Fernandes. We are just as focused and eager as the whole city and Athletic Bilbao fans. From the beginning, we’ve approached this stage with humility; as my brother said, it’s better to live with humility. I understand the fans’ passion, but we must perform at our best for everything to go well.”
He has no memory of the 2012 match against Manchester United: “I’ve always heard about that game because it was a big match in Manchester, and De Marcos and Muniain performed exceptionally. De Marcos says we’ll face an amazing atmosphere in the return leg. We are a unique club that does things very well and is globally recognized for using local players.”
Nico spoke about the injury that kept him out of the match against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu: “I’m much better now and calm. We managed this issue well with the doctors. This problem existed before. I think I can help the team until the end of the season.”
Nico talked about his dreams: “My dream is to lift the trophy at San Mamés. I have the opportunity to make history at this club. This dream never ends.”
When asked if part of this dream is playing in the Champions League with Athletic next season, he replied: “100% focused on tomorrow’s game, reaching the final, and winning it. I’m very happy here, and I’ve always wanted to feel like an important player here. This season is a 10/10 for me.”
