Three Weeks Out
Official: Robert Lewandowski to Miss El Clásico Due to Injury
Medical tests confirmed the Polish striker’s thigh muscle injury, ruling him out for at least three weeks.
Medical examinations on Sunday confirmed Robert Lewandowski’s left thigh muscle injury, which was initially suspected after Barcelona’s match against Celta Vigo. The striker was substituted in the 77th minute, with visible discomfort.
Barcelona’s official statement: “Tests confirmed Robert Lewandowski has suffered a left thigh muscle injury. His return to training will depend on his recovery progress.”
Lewandowski’s absence comes at the worst possible time for Barcelona, as they face Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, Inter Milan in the Champions League semifinals, and the decisive La Liga El Clásico on May 11. He will definitely miss the first leg against Inter, and his availability for the second leg remains uncertain. The earliest possible return could be for the league clash against Real Madrid.
This injury could not have come at a worse time for Lewandowski. Although he was not expected to start in the Copa del Rey final (as Ferran Torres has been the preferred choice in this competition), he was likely to play a key role off the bench.
