Foden’s Unexplained Decline
Pep Guardiola Drops His Favorite Star
Phil Foden, the English star of Manchester City, who scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists last season, playing a key role in securing the club’s fourth consecutive Premier League title, has become a shadow of himself this season.
According to reports, Foden, who carried the team in the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne and was named the Premier League’s Player of the Season, has now struggled under the weight of expectations. Foden, who reached the Euro 2024 final with England last summer, failed to regain his rhythm after a short break at the start of the season and subsequent fitness issues, with his absence hurting the team.
At the start of 2025, he shone with six goals and one assist in the first four league matches, but this form faded in crucial games against Real Madrid in the Champions League and direct clashes with Arsenal and Liverpool, all of which ended in defeats for City.
These results have dimmed City’s hopes of defending their title. Foden was also underwhelming in the Manchester derby against United, despite scoring six goals in four matches against them last season. He has been absent in four of City’s last five matches, featuring in only one.
Guardiola seems to have lost trust in Foden and sidelined him during a critical phase of the season.
In a recent press conference, Guardiola admitted he has given his wingers fewer opportunities than usual, calling it unfair. However, the system change following Erling Haaland’s injury negatively affected Foden, while players like De Bruyne, Doku, and Savio have received more playing time.
In the match against Aston Villa, where Foden was expected to start, Guardiola opted for young James McAtee instead. This decision highlights Foden’s declining status in Guardiola’s plans as City battles to regain their top form.
