Controversy Over Sunday Match Scheduling
Real Madrid’s Anger at La Liga: ‘It’s Intentional Hostility!’
Real Madrid’s management believes La Liga deliberately refused to reschedule their match against Alavés.
Real Madrid has once again expressed frustration over La Liga’s scheduling, this time regarding their domestic fixture placement. The club is the only team among the eight UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists to play a league match on Sunday instead of Saturday, while others—including Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Aston Villa—played their matches on Saturday. Even Paris Saint-Germain, already confirmed as French champions, managed to postpone their league fixture to focus on the Champions League.
This situation has undoubtedly provoked Real Madrid’s leadership, with reports suggesting they view it as deliberate rather than coincidental. Tensions between the club and La Liga’s management appear to have escalated.
Carlo Ancelotti, when asked about the situation in a press conference, chose not to complain, stating that 72 hours of rest would be sufficient for recovery. The Italian manager seems intent on managing the circumstances diplomatically.
From another perspective, Real Madrid has had more rest time than any other Champions League quarter-finalist since their first-leg match. However, playing a crucial league match on Sunday while their Champions League opponent rests could still be a psychological disadvantage.
