Real Madrid’s Strange Behavior: Captains Left in Limbo
Real Madrid has yet to provide any information about contract renewals for Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric.
According to reports, the decision-making time is approaching, and beyond what will happen regarding the future of the coach, everything remains at the level of rumors and scattered movements by agents and managers. Some are trying to position their clients (coaches), while others are assessing the current situation.
The first issue that Real Madrid must address, which has a deadline, is the status of players whose contracts expire on July 30, namely Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric. Both, especially the Croatian player, have been with the team for years and have reached an age where contract extensions are done annually. Ferland Mendy has renewed his contract, but the extension until 2027 has never been officially announced.
In these annually signed contracts, a date is always set by which the club must inform the player whether it intends to renew the contract or not. The end of April or the beginning of May is the standard used to send this message, and Marca has reported that, in this case, no movement has been made in this direction yet.
Vazquez clarified his situation immediately after the match against Arsenal in an interview with Movistar. It was a message of gratitude to the fans that carried various interpretations, but the truth is that, to this day, neither he nor Modric have received any information or offer that would form the basis of a new contract.
This season is incomparable to any previous season, except for the 2019-20 season, which was an exception due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this case, the issue of the Club World Cup arises, and FIFA has given players (with agreement) the option to extend their contracts for one month to provide legal coverage for players and coaches (except Ancelotti) whose contracts with their clubs expire.
If they do not stay with their team, it is hard to imagine that their future team would allow them to join in August after their participation in the Club World Cup and mandatory holidays.
Both would be happy to stay at this club, something Modric has previously admitted publicly, but they know that contract renewal is very complicated. Qatar has appeared on the horizon for the Croatian player, and the reality is that both must gradually think about their future.
Modric wants to continue playing football. The 2026 World Cup is approaching, and like Cristiano Ronaldo, it does not seem that their professional football careers will end anytime soon despite their age. Their football and the passion they show can overcome any obstacle.
