Controversial Move by Referee in Celta Vigo vs. Barcelona Match
Referee Intended to Send Off Raphinha but Changed His Mind!
The referee’s decision to initially show a second yellow card to Raphinha but then retract it has sparked controversy in the Barcelona vs. Celta Vigo match.
According to reports, Barcelona staged a dramatic comeback from 3-1 down to draw 3-3, with Raphinha converting a penalty in the 98th minute to secure a 4-3 victory.
However, minutes before the winning goal, a controversial incident occurred near Celta’s penalty area. Celta Vigo claims the referee intended to show Raphinha a second yellow card, which would have resulted in his dismissal. But the referee changed his mind, allowing the Brazilian star to stay on the pitch and score the decisive goal less than five minutes later.
In the 93rd minute, Raphinha was involved in a heated argument with Mingueza over possession near the touchline. The referee blew his whistle and signaled a foul by Raphinha, who angrily protested. TV footage shows the referee initially reaching for his pocket to show a yellow card but then hesitating and putting it back.
Celta Vigo and their fans believe the referee realized that showing Raphinha a second yellow would mean his dismissal and ultimately decided against it. They argue that the referee spared a player who went on to score the winning goal for Barcelona.
Referee analyst Iturralde González reviewed the incident and stated that Raphinha’s aggressive protest warranted a yellow card, and he was fortunate to escape punishment.
