Could Not Stay in the Premier League
Relegation with Van Nistelrooy: Leicester Returns to the Championship!
After a 1-0 defeat against Liverpool this afternoon, Leicester City’s relegation to the lower division was confirmed.
Leicester City has become the second team, after Southampton, to be relegated from the Premier League this season. The team, managed by Ruud van Nistelrooy, endured a nightmare season, failing to compete with their rivals and delivering poor performances. Leicester went over 12 hours without scoring a home goal and managed only one win in their last 19 Premier League matches—statistics that sealed their fate.
This marks their second relegation in the last three years. A team that less than a decade ago won the Premier League and the FA Cup has now become unstable and in decline.
Steve Cooper began the season as head coach but was dismissed after just 12 games. This decision caused controversy, as a video surfaced showing Leicester players celebrating in a café with a sign reading, “Enzo, I miss you,” a clear reference to former manager Enzo Maresca.
After Cooper, Ruud van Nistelrooy, a Manchester United legend, took charge—a decision that proved costly. Under Cooper, Leicester had only dropped below 16th place once and had not yet entered the relegation zone. They had two wins, four draws, and six losses in 12 games under his management.
However, under Van Nistelrooy, the 2016 champions quickly fell into the relegation zone and have spent only one week outside it since December. Van Nistelrooy also faced numerous controversies, including dropping Harry Winks and clashing with Jannik Vestergaard over bringing his dog to training! Van Nistelrooy managed only two Premier League wins—against Tottenham and West Ham—losing nearly 80% of his league matches.
For comparison, Cooper was sacked after just five winless games. Leicester fans endured heavy defeats this season, including 4-0 losses to Brentford, Everton, and Newcastle—some of the worst moments of the campaign. In 2025, their team not only failed to win at home but also failed to score.
In fact, Leicester became the first team in English professional football history to lose eight consecutive home games without scoring. However, they can take solace in their success last season in the Championship, where they earned 97 points and were promoted as champions.
