Revealed: Referees’ Conversations on Controversial Penalty in El Clásico
Audio files of the referees’ discussions regarding the penalty awarded to Barcelona in El Clásico have been released.
According to “Varzesh3,” the audio of the conversations between the referee and the VAR officials during the final moments of the Copa del Rey final (minute 94 before extra time) has been released. This was when Ricardo de Burgos initially awarded a penalty for Raúl Asensio’s foul on Raphinha.
This incident occurred in the dying moments of this intense and thrilling match, with the score tied at 2-2. At this point, Gonzalez Fuertes, the VAR official, contacts the on-field referee and says: “I suggest you review the penalty decision you made.”
De Burgos responds: “I’m in front of the monitor.”
The VAR official replies: “I’m showing you an image where you can see the attacker pulling his leg back before any possible contact with the defender. I’ll show you another angle.”
Then, from another angle, the same incident in Real Madrid’s penalty area is shown. Gonzalez Fuertes continues: “I’m showing you another image where neither the left nor the right foot makes any contact with the attacker.”
De Burgos carefully reviews the images on the monitor and concludes: “Perfect. I’m canceling the penalty and giving Raphinha a yellow card.”
This decision led to the match going into extra time, where Barcelona ultimately secured the trophy with a late goal from Jules Koundé in the second half of extra time.
