Spanish Nightmare Referee Assigned for Barcelona vs Dortmund Match
Maurizio Mariani has been selected by UEFA as the referee for the Barcelona vs Dortmund match.
The referee for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final between Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona has been confirmed. Barcelona will enter this match with a 4-0 advantage from the first leg, and the match will be officiated by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani. Marco Di Bello, another Italian referee, will assist him in the VAR room.
Mariani was introduced as one of UEFA’s elite group of 30 top referees in Europe alongside Portugal’s João Pedro Silva on January 1st. Notably, this Italian referee also officiated the first leg between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in the same stage of the Champions League last week.
This match will be his seventh in this season’s Champions League. Mariani has previously officiated two matches involving Spanish teams. The first was Real Madrid’s 0-1 defeat against Lille, followed by Girona’s recent match against Arsenal, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Mikel Arteta’s team.
This match at Signal Iduna Park will be the second time Mariani officiates a Barcelona match in Europe. His first was during the Europa League playoff against Manchester United at Spotify Nou Camp, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The same applies to Borussia Dortmund. He has previously officiated only one match for Dortmund in the group stage of the 2022-23 season, a 4-1 victory over Sevilla at Sánchez Pizjuán.
