Ter Stegen’s Dilemma: Flick Faces Tough Decision
The German goalkeeper will travel with the team to Seville, but his role in the Copa del Rey final remains unclear.
According to “Varzesh3,” the question is whether he is traveling merely to support the team or if he will be on the bench as a substitute.
Ter Stegen is ready. Hansi Flick announced that seven months after tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee, the German goalkeeper is ready to return to the field. However, Barcelona’s captain was not included in the squad for the match against Mallorca. But now he is fully involved. Before the game, he confidently pulled Iñaki Peña into the circle Flick formed to talk to the players.
Ter Stegen watched the match against Mallorca from the stands, next to Robert Lewandowski. While constantly occupied with his phone during the game, he now has to decide how to travel to Seville. One option is to accompany the team as a symbolic captain, as he did during the trip to Saudi Arabia, to support his teammates. Another possibility is to be included in the squad and sit on the bench as the first-choice substitute in the final.
In the initial matches, this will be his role. It is still unclear whether his and the German’s role will change when the competitions resume. For now, Flick has made his decision, and Peña will be the starting goalkeeper against Real Madrid and Inter. But perhaps against Valladolid or if La Liga is already decided, it will be Ter Stegen’s turn. The big dilemma will be if Barcelona reaches the Champions League final: who will stand in goal?
