The Secret to Mourinho’s Champions League Success: Laziness is Forbidden!
Two former players and an assistant of Jose Mourinho discussed the reasons behind ‘The Special One’s’ success in winning two Champions League titles, as well as his personality traits.
According to reports, Jose Mourinho has won the Champions League twice with Porto and Inter Milan, making him the subject of a BBC Sport feature titled “How to Win the Champions League?” Former players Ricardo Carvalho, Andre Villas-Boas, and Benni McCarthy shared their insights about ‘The Special One.’
Benni McCarthy, when asked how to impress the current Fenerbahce manager, said: “You have to be a good person, have human qualities, and be willing to work hard. Follow instructions because he hates repeating them. Execute the game plan and don’t deviate. This happened to him with a player named Eden Hazard.”
Ricardo Carvalho, who played under Mourinho at Chelsea and Real Madrid, added: “Sometimes the coach doesn’t give you the trust you think you deserve, but that’s part of football. You have to work hard every day. If you have something to say, say it to Mourinho directly—don’t go to the manager or teammates.”
Andre Villas-Boas, the current president of Porto, said about Mourinho: “Jose Mourinho was very strict in training every day. Laziness and disrespect are things he does not tolerate. When he thinks you are below expectations, he doesn’t hide his opinions. You have to accept that. He speaks very directly and puts pressure on you to achieve your goals because he is also under pressure to succeed.”
