Thomas Partey’s Injury Disrupts Arteta’s Plans for Real Madrid Clash

Arteta’s Plans for Return Leg in Disarray

Thomas Partey’s injury could force Mikel Arteta to reshuffle his lineup for Arsenal’s crucial UEFA Champions League return leg against Real Madrid.

Arteta's Plans for Return Leg in Disarray

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, faces a selection crisis as key midfielder Thomas Partey’s fitness remains uncertain ahead of the decisive match against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. Following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Brentford, Arteta received two major blows: Partey’s injury and a respiratory issue affecting Jorginho.

Arteta on Partey: “Thomas felt discomfort, and we didn’t want to take risks.” Jorginho also had to be substituted due to breathing difficulties, possibly related to his ribs. Both players will undergo tests to determine their availability for the Madrid trip.

Partey, a key figure in Arsenal’s midfield alongside Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, has played over 3,300 minutes in 45 matches this season (38 starts). His absence would force Arteta to make significant tactical adjustments. Arsenal is already without Gabriel Magalhães, their injured center-back, for the rest of the season.

If Partey and Jorginho are unavailable, Arteta may recall Mikel Merino to midfield. Merino, who recently excelled as an emergency forward and scored in the first leg against Real Madrid, has netted six goals in his last 11 appearances. His return to midfield could allow Leandro Trossard to play as a central striker—a role Arteta has used before.

Arsenal’s defensive woes continue, with Ben White also sidelined due to injury. Jurriën Timber was benched, and Partey even played as a makeshift right-back before his substitution.

Arteta stated: “I haven’t spoken to the medical team yet, so I don’t know who will be ready.” With days remaining before the second leg, Arsenal travels to Madrid in a fragile but hopeful state. Their dominant first-leg victory provides confidence, but injuries threaten to derail Arteta’s plans. He must carefully reassemble his lineup to stand a chance against a formidable Real Madrid at home.
