Van Dijk: Liverpool Preparing for a Big Summer
Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain, revealed the club’s plans for major summer transfers and his imminent contract extension until 2027.
Virgil van Dijk confirmed that Liverpool is planning a significant summer transfer window while he is on the verge of signing a new two-year contract until 2027.
His late header in the 2-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday brought Liverpool closer to the Premier League title. Van Dijk, who will soon commit his future to Anfield like Mohamed Salah, expressed satisfaction with the prospect of strengthening the squad and assured that Liverpool can compete for titles in the coming years.
Van Dijk told reporters: “I believe Liverpool should be able to compete for titles in the future. Regardless of who leaves or joins in the summer, this transfer window must be crucial. The board is planning a major transformation, and we, as Liverpool fans, must trust them to do their job.”
He added: “We can definitely improve. Last summer, we didn’t have enough time for pre-season preparations. This year, with proper training, the team can focus on the manager’s objectives.”
On his contract extension, Van Dijk said cautiously: “Progress has been made, but the priority now is the Hillsborough anniversary. After that, an announcement may follow.”
He described his love for Liverpool: “I joined in late 2017 because of the club’s importance to its fans. Success with Liverpool is part of who I am. That’s why I wear this shirt with pride.”
Van Dijk emphasized: “I know what this title means for the club. Many players haven’t experienced this, so it will be a special moment—but there’s still work to do.”
