Warning to Arsenal: Strange Things Happen at the Bernabéu

According to reports, Real Madrid needs a historic comeback to eliminate Arsenal. The only team in the current Champions League season that has managed to overturn such a heavy deficit was Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain, but Real Madrid is also known for its heroic comebacks.

The last time Real Madrid overturned a three-goal deficit in European competitions was in the 1975-76 season. That season, in the second round of the European Cup, Derby County crushed Real Madrid 4-1 in the first leg. The hero of that night was Charlie George, who scored a hat-trick. George also scored in the return leg, but Real Madrid took the game to extra time and ultimately won 5-1. This player later became a legend at Arsenal and still hasn’t forgotten that night.

He explained to Marca: “I scored four goals in two matches against Real Madrid and ended up with nothing. I hope we finish the job on Wednesday, but I keep telling the boys that nothing is over yet. Strange things happen there—it’s not over until the game is really over.”

George also spoke about his performance against Real Madrid on Derby’s website: “I think people exaggerate the hat-trick in the first game too much, as two of them were penalties. I always had confidence in taking penalties, so I always thought I should score them. The other goal that night was good, and in fact, I think the goal I scored in Madrid was my best, but since we lost 5-1, no one ever talked about it.”

Finally, the legend expressed regret about the events of the return leg: “It was very painful to lose like that in the return match. Personally, I scored four goals in two matches against Real Madrid and still got eliminated. I think if we had advanced, we could have had a good run in that competition.”
