Fabio Capello emphasized that Bologna rightfully won the Coppa Italia, though he did not enjoy the match and was particularly dissatisfied with AC Milan’s performance.

AC Milan did nothing: Was this supposed to be a final!

According to reports, a single goal from Ndoye was enough for Bologna to secure a 1-0 victory over AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico, marking their first major trophy in 51 years.

AC Milan, who had won the Supercoppa Italiana in January, failed to replicate their success and now risk missing out on European qualification for next season.

Capello analyzed the final in his column for La Gazzetta dello Sport, stating that the match lacked excitement: “Bologna deserved the cup, even though the game in Rome, frankly, was not a good advertisement for Italian football.”

He continued: “I didn’t like the game. Was this supposed to be a final?” Bologna won with a goal from Ndoye, a key and hardworking player, but the team was more entertaining in other phases of the season. That’s fine—finals are more complicated. But Bologna scored, even without creating many chances, and defended well. On the other hand, AC Milan’s performance was very disappointing. What did Sergio Conceição’s team do? Apart from a few moves from Rafael Leão in the first half, the Rossoneri did nothing, zero. Milan had only one real chance: early in the game with that exchange between Boga, Skorupski, and Jović. After that, practically nothing.”

Capello also suggested that Conceição could have brought on Samuel Chukwueze earlier, as he was one of the few Milan players who tried to make a difference after coming on late in the second half.

He concluded: “When Conceição fell behind, he tried to change the situation by bringing on more attackers, but Thiago Motta had learned from the finals he lost with Fiorentina and closed the defensive gaps, giving the opponent little opportunity. Apart from Leão, the only sparks came from Chukwueze late in the game (maybe he should have come on earlier?). It was too little for a final held after a deeply disappointing season.”
