Alphonso Davies:
‘I Broke Down and Cried After Knee Ligament Tear’
Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies says he suffered a mental breakdown after learning the severity of his knee injury.
Bayern Munich’s 24-year-old left-back Alphonso Davies, also captain of the Canadian national team, opened up about his severe knee injury in a heartfelt YouTube interview. The injury, sustained during Canada’s 2-1 win over the USA in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place match in March 2025, includes a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus.
Davies, who recently extended his contract with Bayern until 2030, spoke about the physical pain and psychological toll of the injury. He left the pitch just 12 minutes into the match due to intense knee pain, initially thought to be minor. However, scans in Munich revealed severe damage.
The injury, requiring surgery, will sideline Davies for at least 6-9 months, ruling him out of the remainder of the 2024-25 season, including Bayern’s Champions League quarterfinal against Inter Milan and the Club World Cup.
Davies described the emotional toll: “Physically it’s painful, but mentally it’s exhausting. I’m trying to keep my energy positive.” He admitted having a breakdown after the diagnosis: “I had a mental collapse. I don’t know what came over me. I cried and was terrified… I barely slept last night because I couldn’t find a comfortable position for my leg.”
Davies, who signed a contract extension in February 2025, remains hopeful: “If I’m lucky, I’ll be back playing by January, but it depends on my recovery speed.”
