According to reports, Ricardo Sá Pinto is just two games away from leading Manchester United to victory in the Europa League. He took over the team mid-season and, despite poor performances in the Premier League, has shown a completely different level in European competitions.

Manchester United won the first leg of the Europa League semi-final against Atletico Bilbao 3-0 and must defend this lead in the return leg.

The Portuguese coach addressed the media in a pre-match press conference.

Amorim on Bruno Fernandes’ future: “It’s easy to understand the transfer rumors about Bruno—not just because of his stats but also his playing style. He’s a top-class player, and we need players like him. He’s a leader and captain. Naturally, everyone wants Bruno, but we want to keep him. He’s one of the best players in the world.”

Amorim on Manchester United’s start against Atletico Bilbao in the first leg: “I felt they (Atletico) were very passionate and excited, but most of their chances came from our mistakes. We lost the ball, and they created opportunities. Sometimes we struggle for 30 minutes, and we show the players why. We’ve reviewed this several times.”

United must suffer to reach the final: “Everything is connected. If you look at our team, you can’t predict what will happen. Some teams adapt to any league. We must approach this game like any other—not as if qualification is guaranteed. I feel we need to score to progress. We must be ready to suffer to reach the final.”

Amorim emphasized that United is improving: “We’re refining our style, gaining more confidence, and ready for this challenge.”

On the pressure of winning as a coach: “It means you have to win. As a coach, it’s not like being a player who wants to play and enjoy. The coach must win. Losing a final, especially this season, would be even more painful. We’re focused on the semi-final.”

Amorim on injuries and key absences for Atletico Bilbao (Williams brothers): “It doesn’t matter to us. We have to play. This is a final for us, and we must go for the win.”

Amorim on criticism about qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa League: “I only know the rules. If someone wants to change them, fine. But the rule is that winning the Europa League gets you into the Champions League, so we follow it. I don’t think much about it.”

Amorim on calling his team the worst Manchester United in history months ago: “Quotes must be seen in context because things change. Since I arrived in the Premier League, we’ve been the worst team. By the end of the season, we might be the worst in Premier League history—but with a European trophy. This season has been disappointing for everyone, but that doesn’t change. Sometimes I need to think more.”

Amorim on Atletico Bilbao: “Their playing idea won’t change, but their players’ characteristics will, and that’s important for us. They’ll be a strong team with a strong identity.”
