Ange Postecoglou Furious at Wenger: Why We Don’t Deserve Champions League!
Ange Postecoglou criticized Arsene Wenger’s comments, claiming that winning the Europa League is by no means an easy task.
According to reports, Tottenham secured a 2-0 victory over Bodo/Glimt to advance to the Europa League final. Now, Postecoglou’s squad faces a tough challenge to end their 17-year trophy drought against Manchester United.
Ange Postecoglou said in the post-match press conference: “I love winning. That’s what I’ve done throughout my career. People overlook it, but that’s fine. I love winning, and I love that my players understood what we needed to do tonight.”
“The key for us was not letting them find any rhythm. They like to play at a high tempo, using the artificial pitch to their advantage. But I think our pressing was outstanding. Credit to the Tottenham players for understanding their task tonight and having the quality to score the goals we did.”
How does it feel to reach the Europa League final?
“I guess it’s a great opportunity. This is my fourth year in European football, and many have been in it longer than me without reaching a final. So, you understand this is something to be grateful for, and I certainly will be. I haven’t thought too much about it because the focus was clearly on tonight.”
“Most importantly, I’m really happy for the players, staff, and especially the supporters. A few hundred were here tonight, and I’m sure they’ll remember this night. And the thousands at home—we’ve given them real hope and something to dream about, that we can do something special this year.”
An all-English final against Manchester United
“It’s going to upset a lot of people, isn’t it? The latest argument is that neither of us can qualify for the Champions League even if we win the trophy, and we’ll only get a team photo because we don’t deserve to be in the Champions League.”
“I mean, who cares if we struggled in the league? Why does that matter? If reaching the final is so easy, why don’t all the teams finishing first, second, or third do it?”
“This is a separate thing. It has nothing to do with the league format. We understand our league form hasn’t been great. We understand the problems we’ve had. Many of them are due to the situation we’ve been in. But how does that diminish the achievement of reaching a final?”
“As I said, this club and others in the Premier League have finished first, second, or third but haven’t reached a final. Why should this be devalued? I don’t care who’s trying and who’s not. I think both us and Manchester United deserved to reach the final.”
“I think we’ve probably beaten teams who will be in the Champions League next year. So, I’m looking forward to it—it should be a great game.”
