Barcelona and Flick’s Dream: A Star Like Dumfries

Hans-Dieter Flick and Barcelona’s management are highly interested in signing a player of Denzel Dumfries’ caliber.

According to reports, Barcelona faced serious challenges in their away match against Inter. Simone Inzaghi’s system, which relies on the speed of its wingers, effectively paralyzed Barça’s defense. Dumfries repeatedly broke through with his physical strength and excellent spatial awareness, demonstrating that having powerful wingers—both offensively and defensively—can be key to success in European football.

Hans-Dieter Flick is well aware of this weakness and intends to find a solution in the upcoming summer transfer window. The German coach knows that Barcelona’s current squad is deep enough that only a truly exceptional player can elevate the team’s level in most positions, which isn’t feasible for many roles.

However, this doesn’t apply to full-backs. The weakness in these positions was evident in the return leg against Inter, where Eric García or Ronald Araújo will likely play on the right, and Gerard Martín on the left. Martín has shown significant growth but is still developing.

    Barcelona's defensive struggles

Flick, like Deco, has been impressed by Dumfries’ performance, and their main target is to sign a powerful full-back who can also enhance Barcelona’s attacking capabilities. Who they ultimately choose remains to be seen, but if the decision is up to Deco and Flick, their ideal candidate is none other than Jeremie Frimpong, Bayer Leverkusen’s talented winger, who has received serious offers from the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid, who also faced issues in this position, acted early by signing Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool. This player was even offered to Barcelona, but the deal came too late and at a prohibitive cost, which the Catalan club was unwilling to match.

Thus, the focus is now on Frimpong, though nothing is finalized yet. Flick has explicitly stated that this signing will only happen if the new player is a game-changer. Otherwise, the club will continue to rely on La Masia’s talents.

Among alternative options, two Brazilians—Dodo (Fiorentina) and Vanderson (Monaco)—are also under consideration, but negotiations will only proceed if their asking prices are reasonable. Paying exorbitant fees is out of the question. Additionally, Marc Pubill, the Spanish right-back and former U21 international, remains on the list, alongside other emerging talents. However, the primary goal is to sign a player who can immediately solidify the starting lineup.

Now, Flick and Deco hope to finish the season successfully before the club’s offices begin their work. A summer with few major moves is anticipated, as Barcelona’s philosophy is clear: what works shouldn’t be changed but preserved.
