Flick’s Preferred Option Escapes
Barcelona Loses Out to Liverpool in Battle for Dutch Star
Jeremie Frimpong, who was Barcelona’s top target, has decided to join Liverpool instead.
According to reports, Barcelona has lost one of its key summer transfer targets. Many German and English media outlets confirmed yesterday that Frimpong has already agreed to join Liverpool for the upcoming season and will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the current campaign.
His contract with Liverpool is expected to run until 2030, with Leverkusen receiving a release clause fee estimated at around €40 million. Liverpool sees Frimpong as the ideal replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
The Dutch defender, who developed in Manchester City’s youth academy, was one of the options Hansi Flick considered for the right-back position at Barcelona (the club had been monitoring him since last season). However, Barcelona faced stiff competition. Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery, also pushed hard to sign the player in recent days, but Liverpool ultimately secured the deal.
Frimpong had previously expressed his desire to leave the Bundesliga for new challenges, and it now appears that his next destination will be the current Premier League champions, managed by Arne Slot. As a result, Barcelona must seriously consider alternative options to meet Flick’s demands.
