Barcelona’s Masterpiece: The Best in 123 Years of El Clásico History

Barcelona has achieved something unprecedented in the history of El Clásico. In over 120 years of clashes between Barça and Real, the Catalans have never dominated Real Madrid so convincingly in a single season.

Barcelona's Masterpiece: The Best in 123 Years of El Clásico History

According to reports, Barcelona now holds the La Liga title. Their victory over Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clásico extended their lead to seven points, and with three matches remaining, they could secure the championship this week if they win. Barça might even be crowned champions tomorrow if Real Madrid fails to defeat Mallorca.

But this isn’t the whole story of Barcelona’s dominance this season. They have defeated Real Madrid four times in four consecutive El Clásicos. This is the first time in history such a record has been achieved. Barcelona has been a real nightmare for Real this season, winning both La Liga home and away fixtures and defeating Carlo Ancelotti’s team in two finals—the Super Cup and Copa del Rey.

The first El Clásico in history took place on May 13, 1902, in the Copa del Rey semifinal, where the Catalans won 2-1. In 123 years of El Clásico history, we have never witnessed one team winning all four encounters in a single season.

    Barcelona vs Real Madrid

The last time a team came close to this record was in the 1982-1983 season. Barcelona also defeated Real Madrid four times that season, but the two teams faced each other five times. Barça won the first La Liga match at the Bernabéu 2-1 and the second leg at Camp Nou 2-1. Later, they defeated Real 2-1 in the Copa del Rey final. Despite it being June, the two teams were scheduled to meet again. In the League Cup final, Barcelona emerged victorious and claimed the title, but the final was played over two legs. Barça drew 2-2 in the first leg in Madrid and won the second leg at Camp Nou 2-1 to become champions.

    Barcelona's historic dominance

Thus, in that season, Barcelona faced Real Madrid five times, drawing once and winning four. In 123 years of El Clásico history, no team has managed to defeat Real Madrid four times in a single season like Hansi Flick’s Barcelona. This historic record highlights the extraordinary team the German coach has built with his mostly young stars.
