According to reports, a year ago, Bayer Leverkusen was living a dream. For the first time in their history, the team won the Bundesliga and added the DFB-Pokal to complete a historic double. Their only defeat came in the Europa League final against Atalanta.

But today, the team faces the departure of the coach who made these achievements possible: Xabi Alonso, who is set to join Real Madrid. And this is not the only news. It appears a mass exodus of the team’s stars has begun.

First, Florian Wirtz, Leverkusen’s star, flew to England with his parents, Hans Wirtz and Karin Groß, to meet with Manchester City officials. Reports suggest he may join the club, though rumors also link him to Bayern Munich and Liverpool. This is terrible news for Leverkusen fans.

Another key player who may leave Leverkusen is Alejandro Grimaldo. The 29-year-old could follow Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. Grimaldo, a product of Barcelona’s academy, joined Benfica in 2015 before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023.

Meanwhile, according to English media reports, Liverpool is negotiating to sign Jeremie Frimpong, Leverkusen’s right-back. The Anfield club has reportedly contacted Leverkusen to discuss the Dutch player’s release clause, estimated between €35-40 million.

The departure of Jonathan Tah has also been officially confirmed. The 29-year-old German center-back bid farewell to Bayer Leverkusen fans on Sunday and may join Bayern Munich.
