Nerazzurri Lacked Vinicius and Mbappe
Beyond Inter: The Toughest Challenge for Kounde’s Successor
Eric Garcia, after his brilliant performance against Inter, now faces one of the biggest tests of the season: stopping Vinicius Junior.
According to reports, Eric, who replaced Jules Kounde—Barcelona’s hero and number one in the Copa del Rey final—against Milan, proved he could confidently play in the unfamiliar right-back position. He scored a spectacular goal in that match, and only an exceptional save by Yann Sommer, Inter’s goalkeeper, prevented him from scoring a brace and becoming the potential comeback hero.
This performance confirmed his ability at right-back, a position he had previously experienced at Girona in a hybrid role (center-back/full-back) to make space for Miguel Gutiérrez on the left.
Eric faces Vinicius while Kounde shone with a historic goal in the Copa del Rey final, raising expectations for his successor. However, Eric has shown he can handle this challenge. Unlike Inter, which lacked classic wingers, Real Madrid presents a more complex threat with Vinicius—who is extremely dangerous in one-on-one duels—and Kylian Mbappé, who tends to drift wide. Eric must neutralize these threats with his tactical intelligence and physical abilities.
Beyond this match, Eric’s status at Barcelona has transformed. After nearly returning to Girona last summer and winter, he has proven his worth in the second half of the season. His tactical intelligence, versatility (center-back, right-back, defensive midfielder), physical and technical qualities, and goal-scoring ability (with stunning goals at Daloz and Giuseppe Meazza) have made him a key player. Hansi Flick and the club now see him as essential for next season. With his contract running until June 2026, an extension has become a priority. Eric has gone from a player at risk of leaving to a cornerstone of the team and is expected to play a major role in Barcelona’s future.
