Rotation System Was Unnecessary
Capello: Inzaghi’s False Pride Cost Inter the Treble
Fabio Capello believes that underestimating opponents in Serie A and focusing too much on the Champions League, an idea by Simone Inzaghi, led to Inter losing their shot at a historic treble.
According to reports, Inter Milan were strong favorites to win the treble just a few weeks ago, but now that dream has evaporated. Inter lost to AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final and suffered shocking defeats against Napoli in Serie A, falling behind in the title race.
Fabio Capello, in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, revealed the secret behind Milan’s success during his tenure when they won both the Champions League and Serie A: “Mental resilience. Back then, there was no concept of squad rotation. Teams had limited lineups, and five substitutions like today weren’t possible. The idea of resting players was almost non-existent. The best players always played unless they were genuinely injured. So, my Milan didn’t have more energy—they had champions with the right mentality. Humble players who, despite many victories, never settled and treated every match like a final.”
The former Rossoneri coach then spoke about Inter’s current situation, especially after their defeats against Bologna and Roma at home: “It seems more like Inter and their coach had excessive pride, or perhaps Inzaghi was too focused on the Champions League. Nerazzurri are the strongest team in Italy and were at one point three points ahead of Napoli. But Inzaghi heavily rotated the squad, players showed less motivation, and some opponents were underestimated. It must be said that compared to my time, the pressures are greater now, especially with media coverage and social media. For a footballer today, maintaining mental energy is much harder.”
