Chicago Fire Competes with Inter Miami for Kevin De Bruyne
Chicago Fire is set to begin negotiations to sign Kevin De Bruyne, competing with Inter Miami.
According to reports, Kevin De Bruyne announced last month that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season after the club decided not to offer him a new contract, opting instead to rebuild for the future. The Belgian star is now exploring projects in Europe and abroad, including potential moves to the Saudi Pro League or Major League Soccer (MLS).
ESPN reports that Chicago Fire in MLS is interested in initiating talks with De Bruyne to persuade him to join the team, despite Inter Miami having priority in signing him. However, Chicago Fire believes it has an advantage over Inter Miami because the latter has already filled its three Designated Player slots with Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, making it unlikely they will use this option.
Chicago Fire believes that if De Bruyne is willing to move to the U.S., the club has the best chance of signing the Manchester City legend. Meanwhile, ESPN reports that New York City FC and D.C. United are also interested in signing the star, but they, like Inter Miami, lack available Designated Player slots. Greg Berhalter, head coach of Chicago Fire and former U.S. national team manager, has previously expressed his desire to sign a playmaker to strengthen the team’s attack.
De Bruyne has emphasized that he will not announce his final decision about his next club until the start of the summer break, as he wants to fully prepare for the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace and does not want to end the season without a trophy for the first time since 2017.
