Hold Your Head High
Emotional Speech by Barcelona President After Defeat
Joan Laporta entered the dressing room after the match against Inter to congratulate his players and deliver an uplifting message: “We will do even better next year.”
According to reports, there was no blame, no harsh words, no criticism, and no negativity. Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, personally thanked the players for their incredible effort in the knockout match against Inter Milan.
He praised the team’s fighting spirit, which, despite challenges—including refereeing decisions—did not surrender and showed strong character. The team managed to come back from two-goal deficits in both legs. Laporta told the players: “You can leave the pitch with your heads held high. The fans are very proud of you.” This message came at a difficult moment, as Barcelona was leading 3-2 against Inter in the 92nd minute and on the verge of reaching the Munich final.
Laporta did not want to deepen the wounds of elimination, knowing the players were already deeply affected. However, he gave an optimistic message about next season’s Champions League campaign, saying, “We will repeat this path and perform even better.”
Undoubtedly, the president’s words were met with appreciation from the players, though the defeat was still too fresh for them to think about the distant future. The frustration and anger among the players and coaching staff were evident—some were still protesting a foul on Gerard Martín that went unpunished before Inter’s third goal.
Nevertheless, the coaching staff hopes this anger will serve as motivation for the upcoming El Clásico at Montjuïc. A victory over Real Madrid would practically secure the La Liga title, with a seven-point lead, a superior goal difference, and a head-to-head advantage—with only three weeks left in the season. This success could cap off a historic season, with three out of four possible trophies: La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Super Cup.
